چکیده

B holes are among the strangest predictions of Einstein’s general theory of relativity: regions of spacetime in which gravity is so strong that nothing—not even light—can escape. More precisely, a black hole is a singularity in spacetime surrounded by an event horizon, a surface that acts as a perfect one-way membrane: matter and radiation can enter the event horizon, but, once inside, can never escape. Remarkably, an isolated, uncharged black hole is completely characterized by only two parameters: its mass, and its spin or angular momentum. Laboratory study of a macroscopic black hole is impossible with current or foreseeable technology, so the only way to test these predictions of Einstein’s theory is to find black holes in the heavens. Not surprisingly, isolated black holes are difficult to see. Not only are they black, they are also very small: a black hole with the mass of the Sun is only a few kilometers in diameter (this statement is deliberately vague: because black holes bend space, notions of “distance” close to a black hole are not unique). However, the prospects for detecting black holes in gas-rich environments are much better. The gas close to the black hole normally takes the form of a rotating disk, called an accretion disk: rather than falling directly into the black hole, the orbiting gas gradually spirals in toward the event horizon as its orbital energy is transformed into heat, which warms the gas until it glows. Relativistic outflows are a common phenomenon in accreting black holes. Despite the enormous differences in scale, accreting stellar-mass black holes (X-ray binaries, collapsars) and super-massive black holes produce jets with analogous physical properties. Here I review microquasars as sources of relativistic jets, gamma-rays, cosmic rays, and high energy neutrinos. 1. The quasar-microquasar a...

Quasars and galaxy formation

Quasars are widely believed to be powered by accretion onto supermassive black holes and there is now considerable evidence for a link between mergers, the activity of quasars and the formation of spheroids. Cattaneo, Haehnelt & Rees (1999) have demonstrated that a very simple model in which supermassive black holes form and accrete most of their mass in mergers of galaxies of comparable masses...

Mass Functions of the Active Black Holes in Distant Quasars from the Large Bright Quasar Survey, the Bright Quasar Survey, and the Color-selected Sample of the Sdss Fall Equatorial Stripe

We present mass functions of distant actively accreting supermassive black holes residing in luminous quasars discovered in the Large Bright Quasar Survey (LBQS), the Bright Quasar Survey (BQS), and the Fall Equatorial Stripe of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). The quasars cover a wide range of redshifts from the local universe to z = 5 and were subject to different selection criteria and f...

Cosmological Evolution of the Duty Cycle of Quasars

Quasars are powered by accretion onto supermassive black holes, but the problem of the duty cycle related to the episodic activity of the black holes remains open as one of the major questions of cosmological evolution of quasars. In this Letter, we obtain quasar duty cycles based on analyses of a large sample composed of 10,979 quasars with redshifts z ≤ 2.1 from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (...

A Unified, Merger-driven Model for the Origin of Starbursts, Quasars, the Cosmic X-ray Background, Supermassive Black Holes and Galaxy Spheroids

We present an evolutionary model for starbursts, quasars, and spheroidal galaxies in which the growth of supermassive black holes plays a dominant role. In this picture, mergers between gas-rich galaxies drive nuclear inflows of gas, producing intense starbursts and feeding the growth of supermassive black holes. During this phase, the black hole is heavily obscured (a “buried” quasar), but fee...
